ENTROIDO

MEDIUM: PHOTOGRAPHY
“Entroido is an ancestral and traditional form of Carnival celebrated in the magical mountains of northern Galicia, a region in northwest Spain. The protagonists are colorful and satirical characters who dance, jump, and parade to the rhythm of drums and the clanging of “chocas” — large cowbells strapped to their waists.
They wear elaborate costumes and striking masks, concealing their identities as they follow ancient rituals whose meanings are often mysterious, passed down through generations. Each village has its own unique characters, such as the Boteiros of Viana or the Cigarróns of Verín, who play key roles in the festivities.
Entroido is a joyful and rebellious celebration, marking the final days of winter and welcoming the brighter season ahead. It’s a moment when chaos and tradition come together — a vivid explosion of sound, color, and community spirit.”
